Side by Side Maintenance Tips

Utility task vehicles, also known as UTVs or side by sides, are sturdy machines that can tackle rough terrain, haul heavy loads, and perform various tasks on farms and construction sites. But for all their strength and versatility, UTVs are not entirely self-sufficient. Just like any vehicle, your side by side needs routine maintenance to stay in good working order.

The following guide covers all the basics of UTV maintenance. If you need expert help, don’t hesitate to contact us at Lintlaw Service. Our highly trained technicians can handle all your repair needs. You can find us in Lintlaw, SK.

A hand is holding a manual.

Your Owner’s Manual

Your first step when attempting any maintenance task should be to consult your owner’s manual. The following tips apply to UTVs in general, but your manufacturer may have specific recommendations that you should keep in mind. You can also use any blank pages in your owner’s manual to take notes and keep track of your maintenance schedule.

Zerk fittings

Joints and Fittings

Zerk fittings, also known as grease fittings, are components found near pivot points with bearings or other parts that require lubrication. You can simply attach a grease gun to your Zerk fittings to lubricate your joints. Just make sure to use your manufacturer’s recommended lubricant. You should also inspect components like ball joints, bushings, and bearings for excessive wear, and replace them as needed.

A white air filter

Air Filters

There are two types of air filters: those that are serviceable, and those that must be replaced. Serviceable air filters include pleated filters and foam filters. To maintain these filters, you will need to clean them thoroughly and apply oil on a regular basis. If your filter is not serviceable, just inspect it regularly and replace it as needed.

Three engine fluids bottles

Engine Fluids

Your UTV engine will perform best when you change the oil and oil filter at regular intervals. Your owner’s manual will indicate how often to freshen up your oil tank, but you might want to change it more frequently during periods of heavy use. You should also change your engine coolant, transmission fluid, and gear case oils per manufacturer directions, or more often depending on usage.

A black drive belt

Drive Belt

A damaged drive belt will impair performance and safety. Inspect your drive belt regularly for signs of excessive wear, such as glazing, cracks, breaks, missing cogs, flat spots, and abrasions. While you’re at it, take a moment to clear any debris from the inlet and outlet ducts.

Two pairs of brakes

Brakes

Brake pads wear down through normal use. Check your brake pads regularly, and replace them when they have reduced to an eighth of an inch in thickness. If your brake rotor has developed grooves, it will also need to be replaced. Your brake fluid will need to be replaced periodically as well, per manufacturer directions.
